A root canal that still hurts? Get a second opinion
A common reason people look for a new dentist is a tooth that already had a root canal and has started hurting again. It doesn't always mean the tooth has to come out.
- Pain or tenderness when you bite, months or years after treatment
- A pimple-like bump on the gum near the tooth
- Swelling in the gum or face around the treated tooth
According to the American Association of Endodontists, the usual reasons a root canal fails are canals that were narrow, curved or missed the first time, a crown fitted too late, or a filling or crown that cracked and let bacteria back in. The signs to look out for are:
Re-treatment means reopening the tooth, cleaning the canals again, finding any that were missed, and resealing them. It is specialist work, which is why ours is led by Dr Ahmad Mahmood, who holds an MDS in Endodontics. An X-ray shows whether your tooth can be saved before you commit to anything. Read more about re-treating a failed root canal.
After a root canal: why the crown matters
A root canal clears the infection, but a tooth that has had one, especially a back tooth, is often weaker than before. That's why a crown usually follows. Fitting it promptly matters: a crown fitted too late is one of the reasons a root canal can fail.
Getting a crown usually takes two visits. At the first, the tooth is numbed and shaped, a scan or impression goes to the lab and a temporary crown protects the tooth for 2 to 3 weeks. At the second, the finished crown is checked for fit, shape and colour, then cemented. Crowns usually last 5 to 15 years, often longer with good care.
At Dental Plus, the root canal and the crown happen in the same clinic, planned by Dr Ahmad Mahmood and our prosthodontist, Dr Hafsa. That saves you a second search for a dentist, and a second trip across Rawalpindi. More in our crowns guide.
Every dental treatment in Rawalpindi, under one roof
Bahria Town is part of Rawalpindi, so for many families here Dental Plus is simply the local dentist. Phases 1 to 8 sit in Rawalpindi district on the Islamabad border, and we are in Phase 4, close to every one of them. For patients from Saddar, Chaklala, Satellite Town or Westridge it is a straight run down GT Road, and at night, when traffic is light, it is often quicker than the times above.
Whatever you need, a consultant in that field leads it. For root canal treatment in Rawalpindi, including re-treating old root fillings, you see Dr Ahmad Mahmood, an MDS endodontist. He also places dental implants. Braces in Rawalpindi, whether metal, ceramic or clear aligners, are planned by our two FCPS orthodontists. Crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures are made by our FCPS prosthodontist, Dr Hafsa.
Day-to-day care is here too: check-ups, teeth cleaning, fillings, teeth whitening, children's dentistry and gum treatment. And because we're open 24 hours, a broken tooth or a swollen face at 2 am doesn't have to wait for the morning. Questions from Central Rawalpindi
Is Bahria Town Phase 4 in Rawalpindi or Islamabad?
Bahria Town Phases 1 to 8 are in Rawalpindi district, on the border with Islamabad, which is why addresses use both names. Dental Plus is in Phase 4, at 4-A Bahria Heights near the PSO petrol station. How to find us.
Which is the best dental clinic in Rawalpindi?
There's no official ranking, so check qualifications, hours, reviews and whether you get the price before treatment. We've compared the top 5 dental clinics in Bahria Town with their Google ratings and hours, and explained why Dental Plus is our pick.
Do you do dental implants and braces in Rawalpindi?
Yes, both at our Bahria Town clinic. Dental implants are placed by Dr Ahmad Mahmood (C-Implantology), and braces are planned by our two FCPS consultant orthodontists.
How far is Dental Plus from Rawalpindi?
About 12.8 km from Saddar, which Google Maps puts at roughly 22 minutes via GT Road in normal traffic. The clinic is at 4-A Bahria Heights, Phase 4, Bahria Town.
Is there a 24 hour dentist for Rawalpindi?
Yes. Dental Plus is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Sundays and public holidays. If it's urgent, call or WhatsApp 0306 5574644 on your way so we're ready.
Which dentist should I see for a failed root canal in Rawalpindi?
Look for an endodontist, the specialist in root canals. At Dental Plus, re-treatment is led by Dr Ahmad Mahmood (BDS, MDS Endodontics). Bring any old X-rays if you have them.
Is it better to re-treat a root canal or take the tooth out?
If the tooth can be saved, keeping it is usually better and often cheaper than an extraction followed by an implant or bridge. Our comparison sets out both options.
Do you treat patients from Rawalpindi cantonment and city areas?
Yes. We see patients from all over Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Anyone is welcome; you don't need a referral.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, especially on a back tooth or after a severe infection. A crown protects the weakened tooth. We tell you before treatment starts whether yours is likely to need one.
How long does a crown last?
Usually 5 to 15 years, and well looked-after crowns can last much longer. Brushing, cleaning between the teeth and a night guard if you grind all help.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Any X-rays or notes from previous dental treatment, a list of the medicines you take, and a note of when the problem started. None of it is essential, but it helps us help you faster.
Can I come straight from work in the evening?
Yes. We're open 24 hours a day, so an evening or late-night appointment is no problem. Book by WhatsApp so your dentist is ready when you arrive.
How do I book from Rawalpindi?
Call or WhatsApp 0306 5574644, or send a booking request. Tell us if you are in pain and we will fit you in as soon as we can.
