New home, new dentist: setting up your family’s dental care
A move is a good moment to get everyone’s teeth on a proper schedule. Here is a simple plan that works for most families:
- A check-up for each family member in the first few months. NICE suggests every 3 months to 2 years for adults, depending on your teeth, and at least once a year for children
- A scale and polish if it has been a while, to clear the tartar a toothbrush leaves behind
- Children's first visit when the first tooth appears, then fluoride and fissure sealants as they grow
- Any old fillings or crowns checked for wear, before they fail
If you are moving from another city, ask your old dentist for copies of recent X-rays and notes on any treatment in progress, such as a root canal or braces. It saves repeating X-rays and lets us carry on where they left off. And save our number in your phone now: 0306 5574644. It's much easier than searching for an open dentist at midnight.
Dentures for parents and grandparents
If an older relative is moving in with you, their dentures are worth a check. Gums and jawbone slowly shrink over the years, so even a good denture gradually gets looser, and many people put up with one that rubs or slips.
A complete denture replaces all the teeth in one jaw; a partial denture fills gaps and clips onto the remaining teeth. New dentures are made over several weeks: the mouth is measured, a wax trial checks the fit and look, then the finished denture is fitted and adjusted. Most people need more than one visit to get it right, and a few weeks to get used to it.
Dentures usually last 7 to 10 years and may need relining every year or two. Signs it is time for a check are clicking, slipping, rubbing, soreness, or red or bleeding gums. Ours are made by Dr Hafsa, our consultant prosthodontist, and older patients can take appointments at their own pace. More in our dentures guide.
Dry mouth, medicines and older teeth
Many medicines for blood pressure, depression, allergies and bladder problems reduce saliva, and saliva is what protects teeth from decay. That is why older parents who have had healthy teeth for years can suddenly start getting cavities, often at the gumline or around old fillings and crowns.
Simple steps help: sip water through the day, chew sugar-free gum, use a high-fluoride toothpaste if your dentist recommends one, and keep sugary drinks to mealtimes. Tell us about every medicine at your check-up, because it changes what we look for. For anyone wearing dentures, dry mouth can also make them rub, so a sore spot is a reason to come in, not something to put up with.

How often should my family see the dentist?
NICE recommends every 3 months to 2 years for adults, depending on the health of your teeth and gums, and at least once a year for children. We will suggest the right interval for each person.
Can you continue treatment I started at another clinic?
Usually, yes. Bring any X-rays and notes you have. We will examine the tooth and tell you how we would carry on, and what it will cost.
Do you make dentures for older family members?
Yes. Dentures are made by our consultant prosthodontist, Dr Hafsa, and adjusted over more than one visit until they fit comfortably.
How long do dentures last?
Usually 7 to 10 years. They may need relining every year or two as the gums and jawbone change shape.
