Braces and growing teeth: a guide for DHA families
If you have children in DHA Phase 2, a few simple milestones make a real difference to their teeth:
- First dental visit: when the first tooth appears, or by the first birthday
- Fluoride varnish: at least twice a year from age 3
- Fissure sealants on the back teeth: around age 6 to 7, and again at 11 to 14
- First orthodontic check: by age 7, as the American Association of Orthodontists recommends
When braces are needed, treatment usually lasts around two years, with an adjustment every 6 to 8 weeks and a retainer afterwards to stop the teeth drifting back. That adds up to a lot of short visits, which is where a clinic 17 minutes from home really helps. Our consultant orthodontists, Dr Afraaz Khan and Dr Obaid Ullah Qureshi, plan every case and explain the length and cost before anything starts.
Thinking about teeth whitening? Read this first
Many people think about whitening before a wedding or family event. It works well on staining from tea, coffee, smoking and age, and results can last around three years. But it isn't for everyone, and it doesn't change everything.
There are two ways to do it. In-clinic whitening is a single appointment of 1 to 2 hours. Home whitening uses custom-made trays filled with gel and worn for 2 to 6 weeks. Either way, we check your teeth and gums first, because decay and gum problems need treating before any whitening.
Whitening only works on natural teeth, so fillings, crowns and veneers stay the same colour and may not match afterwards. It isn't suitable for anyone 17 or under, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Some sensitivity is common for a few days. Salon and online kits can harm teeth and gums. See our whitening guide for the full picture.
Sports, mouthguards and knocked-out teeth
Cricket, hockey and football are some of the most common ways children chip or lose a front tooth. A mouthguard worn during matches and practice takes most of the force of a blow, and for a child with braces it also protects the lips and cheeks from the brackets. Shop-bought boil-and-bite guards are better than nothing; a guard made from a mould of your child's teeth fits better and is easier to wear, so it's more likely to stay in.
If an adult tooth is knocked out, speed matters. Hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly in milk if it's dirty, and push it back into the gap or keep it in milk. Then come straight to us; we're open 24/7 and about 17 minutes from DHA Phase 2. A baby tooth should never be put back. Our emergency page has the full first-aid steps.

Questions from DHA Phase 2
How far is Dental Plus from DHA Phase 2?
About 9.6 km via Jinnah Boulevard, roughly 17 minutes by car according to Google Maps. We are at 4-A Bahria Heights, Phase 4, Bahria Town.
Is there a dentist near DHA Phase 2 open at night?
Yes. Dental Plus is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call or WhatsApp 0306 5574644 before you set off.
When should my child first see a dentist?
When the first tooth appears, or by the first birthday. Early visits are short and mostly about getting comfortable. See our kids' dentist guide.
How long do braces take?
Around two years on average. Some cases finish in under a year, others take up to three, depending on how far the teeth need to move.
Can adults in DHA get braces too?
Yes. Our orthodontists treat adults as well as teenagers, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Around three years if you follow the dentist's advice afterwards, such as cutting down on tea, coffee and smoking.
Will whitening change the colour of my fillings or crowns?
No. Whitening only works on natural teeth, so fillings, crowns and veneers stay the same colour. We will tell you if they might stand out afterwards.
Is teeth whitening safe for teenagers?
No. Whitening isn't suitable for anyone aged 17 or under. For a teenager unhappy with stained or uneven teeth, a check-up and a professional clean is the right first step.
How often should my children have a check-up?
At least once a year, according to NICE, and sometimes more often if they are prone to decay. We will suggest the right gap for each child.
