Key points
- Plaque irritating the gums is the main cause
- Early gum disease is reversible
- Advanced gum disease can loosen and lose teeth
- Brushing twice daily and cleaning between teeth prevent it
Signs of gum disease
The NHS lists:
- Bleeding gums when brushing, flossing or biting hard food
- Swollen, red or tender gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste
Why gums bleed
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth when they are not cleaned well. It irritates the gums and makes them inflamed, so they bleed easily. If plaque stays, it hardens into tartar, which a toothbrush cannot remove and which keeps the irritation going.
Smoking makes gum disease worse. Pregnancy and type 2 diabetes are reasons to have check-ups more often.
How gum disease is treated
In the early stage, a dentist shows you how to clean properly, including between the teeth, and a scale and polish removes the hardened tartar. For more serious gum disease, treatment can include a deep clean below the gumline, antibiotics, removing badly affected teeth, or gum surgery. Our gum disease guide explains each stage.
Keeping your gums healthy
The NHS recommends:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and spit without rinsing
- Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes
- Don't use mouthwash straight after brushing
- Stop smoking, and keep up regular check-ups
When to see a dentist
See a dentist if you have
- Gums that bleed, hurt or swell
- Bad breath that does not go away
- A child with sore or bleeding gums
Get urgent help if
- Very swollen gums
- Loose teeth, or teeth falling out
- Mouth ulcers or red patches, or a lump in your mouth or on your lip

Common questions
Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?
No. Keep brushing gently twice a day and clean between your teeth. Bleeding usually improves as the gums get healthier. See a dentist if it carries on.
Can gum disease be cured?
Early gum disease can be reversed with a professional clean and good home care. Advanced gum disease can be controlled with deep cleaning and regular follow-up.
Does gum disease cause bad breath?
It can. Bad breath or a bad taste is one of its signs.
Can gum disease make teeth fall out?
Yes, if it is left untreated it can damage the bone that holds teeth in, loosening them.
